This is obtained by answering at least 60 out of 80 questions correctly. The exam has 90 questions; however there are 10 pilot questions that are for research purposes only. As of Thursday May 7, 2015, all ServSafe examinees with current certificates will have the ability to download and print their certificate under the Student menu and “Certificates” page. This will require that you have a User account created on Servsafe.com.
The requirement for food safety certification is dictated by the agency (Department of Agriculture or the local department of health) that conducts the licensing and inspection for the food site. It is up to the AAA, in consultation with the licensing and inspection agency’s sanitarian, to define the required food safety certification for the workers at the food site. The ServSafe® Food Manager Certification is designed for managers, chefs, owners and others with supervisory responsibilities in the food industry. The ServSafe Manager Certification verifies that a manager or person-in-charge has sufficient food safety knowledge to protect the public from foodborne illness. The ServSafe® Certification exam is accredited by American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-Conference for Food Protection (CFP) and is recognized in all 50 States. The ServSafe Food Handler Course and Assessment is designed for food preparers, food servers and other frontline staff.
It was developed to educate restaurant workers and other food handlers about the best practices in food safety. Training can be administered on a computer with online courses or in a classroom setting with instructor-led courses. However, all ServSafe Exams, whether online or print-based must be taken in the presence of a licensed proctor. Check regulatory requirements for more specific details, or contact your local health department. Eight hours of home study are recommended prior to the one-day immersion class.
ServSafe® Manager Certification In-person Classes
It may take 2-3 weeks after the exam until your new certificate is available. Finally, Educators are based in the communities they serve and are a resource after the course is completed. Educators have access to the Penn State Extension system of experts even for the most difficult of questions. In order to earn a certificate, you must complete the course and pass the test. If you’ve purchased the online ServSafe course with the exam included, you can take your exam whenever you’re ready by signing into your ServSafe account.

At the conclusion of the course, the learner will be tested on their knowledge of the content and learning outcomes. Upon successfully passing the exam, the learner will be issued a Food Handler’s Certificate document (or card). While there is no minimum age requirement to take the exam, the person-in-charge is responsible for the daily operation of the food facility and must be the certified food protection manager. An educated and Certified Food Protection Manager helps to identify and correct potential food safety issues before they make someone sick. In Allegheny County, a Certified Food Protection Manager is required to be on-site during all
hours of operation in facilities where food is being prepared or handled. If you own or operate a food facility, it is your responsibility to ensure that enough of your staff is certified to meet this requirement. In order to become ServSafe Food Handler certified, you’ll need to complete an online course and pass a 40-question test with at least 30 questions correct, for a 75 percent score or higher. If you pass, you’ll be issued a ServSafe Food Handler Certificate, also known as a food handler card.
Pennsylvania Food Safety Handler & Manager Training Courses & ANSI Exam
Successful completion of this National Restaurant Association workshop and exam qualifies the participant for the certificate. The best thing is to check with your local regulatory authority as to their food safety certification requirement. Most local jurisdictions follow the PDA food code guidelines requiring at least one certified food safety manager. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) requires that every retail food service operation have at least one supervisory employee who holds a “nationally recognized food safety manager certification,” such as ServSafe®.
Upon successful completion of the course and the exam, you will earn your food handler certificate of completion from your training page. Upon successful completion of the exam with a passing score, you may download and print a proof of completion document. The official certificate will be mailed within 15 business days of completing the exam. ServSafe Manager Certification is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and satisfies the “person in charge” requirement. The Exam Only option is for anyone needing to retest or anyone operating their business in a county that allows their food service personnel to recertify by taking the exam only rather than having to retrain. ANSI Certification Exam
To be certified as a food manager, the individual must pass an accredited food safety examination – administered by a certification provider. Below is a list of some course providers, be cautious you are taking a Manager Certification course and NOT a Food Handlers course. In places where training is required, however, ServSafe programs are designed to meet most legal requirements. To ensure ServSafe does meet requirements in your area, you should contact your local health department before seeking certification. Be sure to register for a food safety course early and submit the required materials to the Department of Public Health as soon as you have completed the course. It can take up to 30 business days for the Department of Public Health to mail you a City of Philadelphia food safety certificate.
The original certificate must be posted at the food business where customers can see it. During a health inspection, your food safety certified person or Person in Charge will be asked to show a valid photo ID to the health inspector. The certified person or PIC will also be asked to answer a series of questions to show a good understanding of food safety. These designated employees, often referred to as the Person In Charge or PIC, must complete a food safety course with an approved provider and receive an official City of Philadelphia food safety personnel certificate.
The exam will highlight areas of improvement, so you can go back to the training if needed and look over the content again. After completing the course and passing the multiple-choice exam with a score of 70% or higher, participants will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate.
