As I conclude my course studies in the reading specialist certification program, I have thought deeply about my preferred role as a reading specialist. An important component of this course will be the evaluation and selection of print, non-print and electronic material appropriate for the K-6 student. Explores methods of teaching reading, writing, and study skills in content area subjects. Emphasis on text structure and the difference between narrative and expository text, graphic organizers for text structure, the reading/writing process as applied to informational text. Classroom adaptations for culturally and linguistically diverse populations in the content areas also will be addressed. TEA requires a graduate degree in a literacy related field to be recommended for the Texas Reading Specialists certification; therefore, this stand alone certification is only offered for those holding a graduate degree. The Reading Specialist Preparation Program is available to certified teachers who want to add to their credentials by pursuing the Reading Specialist Certificate while earning their Master of Education. The application to the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) for Reading Specialist must be submitted and accepted for admission to the EPP, prior to TExES test approval and formal practicum.
