As I conclude my course studies in the reading specialist certification program, I have thought deeply about my preferred role as a reading specialist. I would like to become a literacy coach so that I can use my knowledge and skills to develop effective lesson plans, to assist teachers with instructional planning, and to train teachers on the various teaching practices used in the reading classroom. Completion of the master’s program in reading education enables the student to apply for Professional Certification as a Reading Specialist (1-12) upon satisfactory completion of the state mandated TExES requirement. In this course graduate students examine the theoretical and functional aspects of literacy across the curriculum. Emphasis is placed on (a) ways to promote and develop students’ abilities to learn through text based instruction, (b) ways to promote the acquisition of study skills, and (c) ways to assist struggling readers in a classroom situation. Students who took this course as READ 5369 may not take the course as READ 6369. Language acquisition and functions of language are explored for beginning literacy P-4.

This course focuses on research-based theories of student motivation and self-regulation. It also highlights practical applications of these theories for students in developmental education and postsecondary contexts. This course uses graphical and numerical techniques to explore school related data, characterize patterns, and describe departures from patterns.
The course scope includes an emphasis on the foundational literature in curriculum theory, as well as historical and current curricular structures and best practices specific to developmental education. This seminar-based course consists of the study of current trends, issues, and pedagogical applications specific to the teaching of history for young learners. The course examines the history of history education, issues in the teaching of history, and how to teach history from multiple perspectives.
The course examines reading curricula, early literacy assessment, and selection of diverse material. This course will provide students with information on current issues and emerging trends to enhance their ability to function effectively as educational technology leaders at the school, district, or agency level. An overview of the field of developmental education and of the various types of programs designed to meet the needs of the underprepared learner. Special emphasis is on needs assessment, program design, implementation, management and leadership, and evaluation.

An academic minor in reading education is available for those students majoring in other areas. Neither the major nor the minor leads to initial certification as a teacher. A probationary certificate for Reading Specialist is available upon completion of any 24 hours of the Master of Education in Reading Education Program. The probationary certificate requires an employment offer as a Reading Specialist and a passing score on the state certification exam. Students who apply for a probationary certificate must pay the required fees for the certificate, the mentor teacher, and the supervisor.

A critical study of literacy trends and an introduction of materials which research has found are appropriate and effective in developing life-long readers will be presented in this course. An important component of this course will be the evaluation and selection of print, non-print and electronic material appropriate for the K-6 student. Explores methods of teaching reading, writing, and study skills in content area subjects. Emphasis on text structure and the difference between narrative and expository text, graphic organizers for text structure, the reading/writing process as applied to informational text. Classroom adaptations for culturally and linguistically diverse populations in the content areas also will be addressed. An applicant may be denied admission if the conditions for unconditional or probationary admission are not met.
TEA requires a graduate degree in a literacy related field to be recommended for the Texas Reading Specialists certification; therefore, this stand alone certification is only offered for those holding a graduate degree. The Reading Specialist Preparation Program is available to certified teachers who want to add to their credentials by pursuing the Reading Specialist Certificate while earning their Master of Education. The application to the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) for Reading Specialist must be submitted and accepted for admission to the EPP, prior to TExES test approval and formal practicum. This certification is an add-on licensure, and you must be a licensed teacher in order to enroll in this graduate program.
