Like their non-disabled peers, students with disabilities are also expected to take Regents exams. For students entering 9th grade in September 2019 and thereafter, the Local Diploma is only offered to disabled students. Students with an Individualized Education Program or 504 plan are able to obtain a local diploma through ‘safety nets’. Similar to the regents diploma, the local diploma is recognized as a high school diploma, which would allow the student to attend college, enroll in the military, and have jobs that require a high school diploma.
The NYSED says this summer a group of teachers specialized in standardized testing will meet to talk about how students should be graded in math and English exams. Part of the answer might be small shifts in the high school population. Even if Common Core approaches are superior and teachers have mastered the new material, average scores could fall and the failure rate could rise when the share of low-performing students increases. Scholars in Humanities will take a Regents examination in both English and U.S. This is a Regents Exam-oriented course, which emphasizes how effective writing grows from close observation. The writing of various types of fiction and nonfiction essays is addressed, as well as the basic methods of research. In order to strengthen and expand reading skills, students in this course will read quality fiction and nonfiction, and will generate oral and written responses to those genres. Some middle schools in New York offer Honors programs that allow students to take the Algebra I, U.S. History & Government, Earth Science, and Living Environment Regents exams in June of eighth grade. Local Diplomas are offered by New York State school districts for students who did not or cannot pass the Regents Diploma requirements.
This course is designed for scholars who have an above-average command of language skills. Emphasis is placed on higher-level reading and writing activities, including research skills. Focus is also placed on preparation for the New York State English Regents Exam and the SAT. Schools should provide testing accommodations to ELLs/MLLs, as needed, on all NYS ELA and content-area assessments (i.e., Mathematics, Science and Social Studies). Districts/schools must make all necessary arrangements to make these accommodations available for ELLs/MLLs who need them.
Each year in June, students in some middle schools and most high schools across New York State will take Regents Exams. These standardized tests determine whether students have met the required educational standards to receive a high school diploma. Students and parents may anticipate these assessments with a degree of worry, but understanding what they’re all about can help alleviate the pressure that families feel about these educational hurdles. Immigrant students, parents, and community leaders have been advocating for the Board of Regents, the Governor, and the State Legislature to address the dropout crisis by establishing an alternative English proficiency test for late-arriving students to be able to graduate. In 2014, the Board of Regents created the 4+1 option, where students must pass at least 4 regents exams—one per subject—and pass one additional Regents exam in any subject. Many private and parochial schools require their students to take the Regents exams, though not all participate in the system.

Alternatively, you can swap out any of the Regents exams listed above for another State-approved alternative assessment. The requirements for which and how many NYS Regents exams you need to graduate (and how well you need to do on the exams) depend on what kind of diploma you’ll be graduating with. These, in turn, are evaluated by teachers qualified in each required subject area. Students who attend Consortium schools are, however, required to take the Regents English exam. There are four required subject areas that students are tested on math, English, science, and social studies. In order to receive a Regents diploma, most high schoolers must pass a minimum of 22 credits in required courses and receive a score of 65 or above on at least five Regents exams. Note that there are a number of other standardized tests, such as AP exams or particular SAT subject tests, that can be substituted for Regents exams.
Another six had 90% or more of their students score proficient on the geometry Regents test last year. Students are deemed proficient if they receive a score of 3 and above, according to the state. While administering the test, there are multiple stations for each section. For example, each section 1 station may have different rocks and minerals, though the task is the same. Except for the Physics exam, which is administered only in June, the exams are given in January, June, and August. The June 2020, August 2020, and January 2021, then later, August 2021 and January 2022 exams were not administered as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. All records relating to appeals must be maintained by the school and available for inspection by NYSED. Appeals must also be reported to NYSED at the conclusion of each school year.
The best way to study for the ELA Regents is to take old Regents tests. Thankfully, the New York State Education Department puts years of old exams (all the way back to 2014) online for you to practice from, as well as their corresponding scoring key and conversion chart. When you take the practice test, time each section as you would be when you take the real thing, and make sure there are no distractions in the room. Once you’re done, score it (you need at least a 65 to pass) and examine which sections you need to work on. For example, as an eighth-grader I took Regents Earth Science, which was the honors science class for that grade (vs. regular Earth Science), and so had to take the Regents at the end of the year (because that’s what my school required). For other classes, the Regents exams were not only required at the end of the year, but were part of our grades for the final quarter of the year, so it behooved us to try to do well on them.

Student Profiles and Regents Exams

There are three times each year when students can take Regents exams — January, June and August. You don’t have to study for hours every night, but giving yourself enough lead time before the test means you’ll have more flexibility in the amount of time you spend on each unit. For instance, you might find that you only need to spend a day reviewing US History up through the Civil War, but need to spend a week on Reconstruction. Each Regents exam is administered over the course of three hours in a single day (rest in 2011, six-hours-over-two-days English Regents exam; you will not be missed). Those required exams include English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and an additional Regents exam. Just as state assessments for students in third through eighth grades are used to measure student achievement annually, New York State’s Regents exams provide comparable feedback for high schoolers. Families and educators are able to learn whether students have met the standards that are considered essential for the next step in a student’s life, whether this is enrolling in college or beginning a career directly after high school. But Rubel argues that low-achieving students may continue to need more support with Common Core, especially students with disabilities and English Language Learners. He reasons  it would be straightforward to target extra support and tutoring to high school students who obtain the lowest “1” score on their eighth-grade state assessments, indicating that the child is not on track to be college ready. Data from the State Education Department indicate that fewer English-language learners take the Regents exams, those who take the exams are more likely to fail, and those who do pass are more likely to pass the exams with lower scores.
Only dictionaries and glossaries that give direct translations are allowed; those that give definitions of words are not permitted, as they may give the child an unfair advantage. One hypothesis suggested by USC’s Polikoff is that low-achieving kids who were introduced to Common Core standards midway through their educational life might have been harmed in the sometimes rocky transition. The high school students who took the Regents last year were in third, fourth and fifth grades when Common Core was first introduced to them. Those are critical years to learn and master multiplication, division and fractions.
By subject-based, we mean that you aren’t just tested on broad categories like “Math” or “Science”—instead, you’ll take Regents in specific subjects, like Algebra 1, Chemistry, US History & Government, and so on. Results are used for student high school graduation requirements, school quality reports, and teacher development and evaluation. The Regents exams are scored by licensed and trained New York City teachers, and follows NY State Education Department policies on scoring of State exams. Students may take Advanced Placement (AP) exams in order to earn the potential for college credits. The College Board administers AP exams and provides the DOE with results for NYC students.
The data doesn’t prove that English Regents exams are the source of low graduation rates among English learners because other factors could have influenced the recent rise, multiple policy experts who reviewed the data said. In setting the lowest score a student can get to reach each achievement level, teachers on the committee consider what content a student must know, the committee told the Board of Regents. “NYSSBA’s members were concerned that, with the upcoming transition to new learning standards, goals that were linked to adoption of the Common Core learning standards may no longer be appropriate,” said Julie Marlette, the association’s director of governmental relations. But DeSiato of East Syracuse-Minoa said educators also are looking beyond the Regents exams and their scoring rubrics and thinking about other emerging methods of assessment.
For a limited time, some students will even have the option of taking both exams and applying the higher score toward their Regents Diploma. Students who have an English as a Second Language are also able to obtain the local diploma simply by scoring 55 or higher in all 5 regents examinations required for high school graduation. Students with IEPs or 504 accommodations who no longer have the option of taking RCTs but whose disability makes it difficult or impossible to achieve passing scores on all five Regents exams have two alternative pathways to attain a high school diploma. “Therefore, there will be no change in the scale scores for students to meet the graduation requirements for the Class of 2022 on either the ELA or mathematics Regents examination,” Elia wrote. While the subject-content Regents exams are not intended to gauge English proficiency, the English Language Arts exam is intended to ensure that a student has achieved a certain level in reading and writing English.

The standing committee will be comprised of the school principal as chair, three teachers (not including the teacher of the student making the appeal), and one additional administrator. The committee will review an appeal within ten school days of its receipt and make a recommendation to the school superintendent, or Chancellor of the City School District of the City of New York (or his/her designee), to accept or deny the appeal.
