You must demonstrate a strong mastery of language acquisition pedagogy, best teaching practices, Spanish language and culture, and the ability to read, listen to, and understand complex texts in Spanish. The Curriculum Standards and Student Support Division provides direction and leadership for the state’s LOTE programs for Kindergarten through grade 12. Staff facilitate various statewide initiatives, including implementation of the LOTE Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) and assistance to the Instructional Materials Division for the adoption process for LOTE instructional materials. Additional responsibilities include maintaining communication with the field related to curriculum, instruction, and assessment, as well as graduation requirements in Texas Administrative Code, Chapter 74. D. The State Board of Education (SBOE) has legislative authority to adopt the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for each subject of the required curriculum. Below are the contents of an email that was sent on March 15 by the Enrichment division of TEA regarding these issues. In addition to these changes, the SBOE changed the recommended prerequisites for AP Computer Science A from Computer Science I and Algebra II to only recommending Algebra I. The board enacted these changes upon the advice of the College Board (19 TAC, Subchapter 126.62, a). C. Understands frequently used idiomatic words and expressions in a variety of culturally specific authentic materials. You are allowed to take a restroom break during the exam, but the timer will not be paused while you are away. Once you enter the testing room, you will be given a brief tutorial on the computer-adaptive testing system. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
Experienced educator Greta Lundgaard taught German, Biology, and English before leaving the classroom to become the LOTE Coordinator at Lewisville ISD and Plano ISD. Greta was instrumental in pushing through pathways for certification for Texas teachers of Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese in 2007 and participated in the development of the 2014 TEKS for LOTE, serving on the Level 1-4 TEKS Committee. When you arrive, you will be asked to sign in and present one form of valid photo ID. If you forget to bring your ID, or if your ID is invalid, you will not be permitted to take the exam that day. To register for the exam, you must create an online NES account via their website. Once your account has been created, you can use it to register for the exam and schedule an exam date. The PACT (Pre-Admission Content Test) 713 is required to enter alternative certification programs.
This isn’t the kind of test where you can study a set of flashcards and expect to be prepared. You need a thorough study approach that gives you time to absorb all of the material. You’ll also be tested on Spanish-language cultural content, like art, literature, famous people, landmarks, holidays, and traditions. The TExES LOTE Spanish exam contains 120 selected-response questions and 8 constructed-response questions, and you will be given a time limit of 4 hours and 45 minutes. This exam is designed to measure your ability to teach Spanish as a second language to learners of all ability levels. The Texas Education Agency will improve outcomes for all public school students in the state by providing leadership, guidance, and support to school systems.
The Texas Foreign Language Association (TFLA) Annual Conference features an amazing array of professional learning and collaborative networking opportunities. Innovative courses must be approved by either the State Board of Education (SBOE) or the commissioner of education. State-approved innovative courses may satisfy state elective credit toward graduation. The approval of the local board of trustees is required in order for school districts and charter schools to offer state-approved innovative courses. According to the SBOE rules, districts do not have an option as to whether they give one or two credits for these two courses. However, they do have the option to how much time is necessary to learn the standards. The education code stipulates that districts are required to provide sufficient time for teachers to teach and for students to learn the content of a course.
In addition, the board approved a provision that allows a student who successfully completes AP Computer Science A or IB Computer Science Higher Level to satisfy both one advanced mathematics requirement AND a LOTE requirement for graduation (19 TAC, Subchapter 74.11, k). The student would not earn two credits, but could use one of these two computer science courses to satisfy two graduation requirements. E. Understands and applies strategies forguiding students in their comprehension of the nature of language and culture through comparisons between the target cultures and the students’ own language(s) and culture(s), including strategies for helping students understand the influence of one language or culture on another. Applies knowledge of instructional and assessment strategies, practices and sequences to facilitate effective communication in the target language, including strategies for making speech comprehensible. D. Understands the roles of various learning styles (e.g., visual, tactile, aural) in second-language acquisition and plans, selects and creates a variety of instructional and assessment materials that are responsive to various language-learning styles and that raise students’ awareness of their own language-learning styles. The focus of a LOTE classroom what students can do with language in terms of speaking, writing, listening, and reading in real-world situations in a spontaneous and non-rehearsed context.
F. Applies theories and processes that guide work with particular student populations in the LOTE classroom (e.g.,heritage learners, gifted and talented, special needs) to plan, select and create instructional and assessment strategies that enhance language acquisition and success for all students. The SBOE also took some positive steps toward adopting interoperability standards for digital products. TEA has worked with school districts to create standards for machine-readable TEKS. The board adopted rules on April 13 that will require companies that submit digital instructional materials for Proclamation 2020 to use these new standards. This will make it much easier for districts to import the TEKS into their LMS. Over time, the TEA-created machine-readable TEKS will also be incorporated into digital products purchased by the district, which again will aid a district’s implementation of instructional materials.

If your students were able to master the standards in one period a day in prior years, there is no need to increase the seat time. Complete course descriptions that include content standards, recommended resources, and educator certification requirements are available to download from the content area pages. As a reminder, school districts must have the approval of their local board of trustees to offer approved innovative courses, and innovative courses are eligible to meet state elective credit only and may not be used to fulfill any other specific graduation requirement. Texas teachers and districts have been asking for more options for students who want to take computer science courses, as well as asking the state to establish some interoperability standards for digital instructional materials. The Texas State Board of Education responded to these requests at their April 2018 board meeting.
The list of innovative courses expiring at the end of the 2020–2021 school year is available on the Innovative Courses webpage. Should TEA not receive an application to renew, the agency may expire the course at the end of the current school year. For years, AP Computer Science A counted as an elective or as a math credit. If the student needed an advanced math credit, they could use AP CS A to satisfy this requirement.

After you schedule your test appointment, Pearson VUE will send you a confirmation email listing your test appointment date and time, the address and phone number of the test center, and directions to the test center. The professional development opportunities for the next school year will focus on proficiency. In addition, the SBOE is requiring publishers who submit digital instructional materials for Proclamation 2019 to complete The Report on Interoperability and Ease of Use. This report will provide the SBOE with valuable information about what standards the different companies are using, which will help them decide which standards are the most common. This will aid in deciding which interoperability standards they should adopt and require for future proclamations. They have invested countless hours uploading and downloading student information.
