Courses in the Special Education Learning Behavior Specialist 1 (LBS1) Endorsement program are a subset of courses in the Special Education for Teachers concentration in the Special Education master’s degree program. Students who complete the endorsement program have the option to continue coursework in Special Education if they want to eventually earn an LBSI license or an LBSI license and a full master’s degree in this area.
The course titles and descriptions have been approved by the Illinois State Board of Education. The student populations with which they will be endorsed to work are diagnosed with specific learning disabilities, social emotional disorders, physically handicapped, autism, and traumatic brain injury. For those in general education licensure programs, you can be endorsed to teach in your academic content area and special education at the same time. By adding this endorsement you can broaden your teaching skills to the wide array of ways that special educators support youth and families, and teach either general or special education. Educators who earn a LBSI endorsement may work as special education teachers in urban and suburban, public and private schools, and private practice and private learning centers provide other career options.

The Early Childhood Subsequent Teaching Endorsement program is designed for those looking to expand their career options to teach children from birth to grade 2. The Basic Certificate-Learning Behavior Specialist (LBS1) Endorsement is for undergraduate degree holders with an Illinois Professional Educator License. The Learning Behavior Specialist (LBS1) Endorsement prepares students to teach in special education settings. Licensed teachers can complete the courses for the LBS1 endorsement as non-degree students through UIC Extended Campus.

Complete double licensure requirements for special education and elementary education in a four-year bachelor’s degree program. Graduate Admission

Teacher candidates earning an initial teaching license at North Central College may elect to add a Learning Behavior Specialist 1 (LBS1) endorsement by taking an additional 3 courses. Adding the endorsement allows candidates to teach in special education programs at the developmental level of their initial license. Electing to add the LBS1 endorsement may require a student to take more than 128 credit hours at NCC. International Transcript Requirements

If you choose this option, as a non-degree student you will not be eligible for scholarships and financial aid. Students with disabilities might learn and show their knowledge in unique and very interesting ways, which makes the LBS1 endorsement valuable for teachers of all subject areas in both general and special education. To be eligible for the Learning Behavior Specialist 1 (LBS1) endorsement only program, students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and a valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL). The Illinois state government requires all aspiring learning behavior specialists to take the ILTS Learning Behavior Specialist I exam as a final step to earning their license.
