Those required exams include English language arts, mathematics, science, social studies and an additional Regents exam. Today, NYS is undergoing another transition as it aligns these (and other) state assessments with the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) that the state adopted in 2010. Students who are now taking Regents exams may have received instruction based on either the old learning standards or the newer CCLS.

Students with disabilities must still have the appropriate number of credits to graduate. In New York State, Regents Examinations are statewide standardized examinations in core high school subjects. To graduate, students are required to have earned appropriate credits in a number of specific subjects by passing year-long or half-year courses, after which they must pass at least five Regents examinations in some of the subject areas. For higher-achieving students, a Regents with Advanced designation and an Honors designation are also offered. Students with disabilities or enrolled in an English as a Second Language program are able to earn a local diploma.

State officials acknowledged the spike could have been connected to the temporary cancellation of the Regents exams, and specifically the English exam, but they couldn’t say to what extent.

By annotating, it will guide them  to identify easily  important information and determine context clues or hint  for answers. The format of the laboratory practical for Earth Science was changed in 2008. Currently, it consists of three sections, each with a time limit of nine minutes. While administering the test, there are multiple stations for each section. For example, each section 1 station may have different rocks and minerals, though the task is the same.
Teachers enrolled in this course will explore the three sections of the NYS English Regents Exam as well as proven tactics and strategies aimed at thoroughly preparing students to achieve mastery. Opponents of this idea say that creating different standards for English-language learners does them a disservice by not preparing them as well as those students who are native English-speakers. Advocates of the alternative test counter that an alternative exam would set an appropriately high standard that reflects the background and experiences of recently-arrived students.
Students may also take Regents exams after leaving high school to earn a diploma. ELA and Math test results are available at the city, borough, district, and school levels. Each Excel file contains results for all students tested, as well as results by student characteristics including disability status, English Language Learner (ELL) status, race/ethnicity, and gender.
Immigrant students, parents, and community leaders have been advocating for the Board of Regents, the Governor, and the State Legislature to address the dropout crisis by establishing an alternative English proficiency test for late-arriving students to be able to graduate. New York State high school Regents Exams are developed by the State Education Department in collaboration with New York State high school content certified educators. The input of educators in all phases ensures that the diversity of New York State students is represented in the test development process. The educator input process also means that the tests are designed with an understanding of students’ CCLS instructional experience.
At the same time, the data is likely fodder for advocates who have called for the state to stop requiring the Regents exams to graduate. It was 2020, and Toribio felt exhausted from learning years’ worth of material while balancing school with a full-time restaurant job. The New York State Education Department (NYSED) Regents exams are subject-based tests generally taken at the end of the school year in June (although there are also August and January test dates for makeups/mid-year exams). By subject-based, we mean that you aren’t just tested on broad categories like “Math” or “Science”—instead, you’ll take Regents in specific subjects, like Algebra 1, Chemistry, US History & Government, and so on. Remember that fun, not-at-all-something-that-happened thing I mentioned in the scheduling section about sleeping through the Regents? While I didn’t do this, I know people who did, and rushing to get to school before the deadline and then rushing through the test is not super conducive to scoring well. Spreading out your studying also means you’ll be sleeping in between studying, which will help cement your memory of all that information you’re reading and quizzing yourself on. Now that you have a better idea of what the Regents are, we’ll move on to discussing how many Regents exams you have to take.

Preparing Students for the ELA Regents Exam

To graduate in New York State, high school students must pass five Regents exams — in English, math, global history, U.S. history and government, and a science. Of the more than 310,380 high school students in New York City, an estimated 36,867 of them, or 12 percent, are students who are in the process of learning English. Because all Regents tests are, to a large degree, language-based, students who are English-language learners may struggle to attain scores of 65 or above on all five required tests. For these students, it is still possible — if an appeal is granted by their local school district — to earn a Local Diploma by scoring 65 or above on four exams and 55–61 on the English exam. Alternatively, ELL students can score 65 or above on three tests, 62–64 on a fourth, and 55–61 on the English exam, again with an approved appeal from their local school district.

These schools’ argument is that their own diploma requirements exceed Regents standards. Schools run by the Society of Jesus, such as Canisius High School, Fordham Prep, McQuaid Jesuit, Regis and Xavier, and by the Society of Mary (Marianists), such as Chaminade and Kellenberg, have not used Regents exams for decades. The Masters School, The Ursuline School, The Hackley School, The Harvey School, Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School, Manlius Pebble Hill School, and Nichols School also do not use the Regents system. To receive a diploma, most students are required to take at least five Regents exams, which measure student achievement in high school-level choices.
This course is designed for scholars who have an above-average command of language skills. Emphasis is placed on higher-level reading and writing activities, including research skills. Focus is also placed on preparation for the New York State English Regents Exam and the SAT.

While test site accommodations can go a long way toward helping students like Sharzina, parents and advocates are concerned about the lack of information regarding the types of accommodations available throughout the state and inconsistencies in administering these accommodations.
For example, as an eighth-grader I took Regents Earth Science, which was the honors science class for that grade (vs. regular Earth Science), and so had to take the Regents at the end of the year (because that’s what my school required). For other classes, the Regents exams were not only required at the end of the year, but were part of our grades for the final quarter of the year, so it behooved us to try to do well on them. The requirements for the Regents with Advanced Designation diploma include everything you need to do for the Regents Diploma plus passing three additional Regents exams, for a total of seven or eight Regents exams.

Unless you have an IEP or are an English language learner, you need to meet the Regents diploma requirements to graduate high school. Because there are multiple subject-based tests that you’ll have to take, the Regents aren’t exactly considered a high school exit examination, which tend to be more Math/English Language Arts-focused. Like many of her high school classmates, Sharzina Halim, a senior at Curtis High School in Staten Island, will be taking her Regents exams in early June, and she is nervous about them. Her graduation is primarily dependent on her ability to pass the exams in Math, Living Environment, and History, but her native language is Bengali, and she is worried that, despite the extra tutoring she has been getting, she will not be able to understand certain words. Those students are acclimating to a new country, as well as a new language, and could benefit from extra support and more time instead of “getting them out as quickly as possible,” he said.
Sugarman said she often hears from educators about students who have passed all of their classes, but can’t pass the English Regents exam. Results include all administrations of Regents exams in each school year and reports the highest score for each student for each Regents exam taken in each school year. The Regents Excel file contains results for all students tested, as well as results by student characteristics including disability status, English Language Learner (ELL) status, race/ethnicity, and gender. All of them who took the test on January 2019 passed both exams., ELA and Algebra 1. Rama and Delano’s scores in ELA went up way too high from the required passing score of 55.
From such a “portfolio examination” would be issued a “Regents equivalency” grade for the areas of Math, English, History, and Science, and a “Regents Equivalency” diploma would be awarded to the student at commencement. Students enrolled in these schools do, however, take the English Language Arts Regents exam as a part of the New York State school accountability system. Students who have an English as a Second Language are also able to obtain the local diploma simply by scoring 55 or higher in all 5 regents examinations required for high school graduation. The standing committee will be comprised of the school principal as chair, three teachers (not including the teacher of the student making the appeal), and one additional administrator.

Students may take Advanced Placement (AP) exams in order to earn the potential for college credits. The College Board administers AP exams and provides the DOE with results for NYC students. On January 22, 2018 at 8 am, head proctor Mrs.Whalen said the five words that kids all despise, “You may begin the test.” At Bethpage High School, AP English Language students took 1 of the 2 major exams of the year for 11th graders. The course focuses on critical thinking skills, independent research, writing, artistic skills, and aesthetic application. A team of three faculty members, one from each department, teaches Humanities in a double period. Scholars in Humanities will take a Regents examination in both English and U.S. Appeals by ELLs under the Safety Net will be reviewed by the district’s standing committee that reviews all other Regents examination score appeals. The decision to grant or deny an appeal is made at the district level and is not subject to New York State Education Department (NYSED) approval.
The Regents exams are scored by licensed and trained New York City teachers, and follows NY State Education Department policies on scoring of State exams. Test results are available for grade 3-8 state assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, New York State Regents exams, SAT, Advanced Placement exams, and the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The availability of reports vary by school-year due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and cancellation of exams. The Process of Elimination has been one of the effective strategies in taking a test. In addition to this strategy, I  trained my students to annotate every reading passage or text given to them.
Only dictionaries and glossaries that give direct translations are allowed; those that give definitions of words are not permitted, as they may give the child an unfair advantage. The Comprehensive English Regents Exam, also referred to as the English Language Arts (ELA) Examination, is a widely used measure of student achievement in the K-12 system in New York, yet it is not without criticism. One concern is that the ELA Regents Exam may be contributing to the widening of the gap in graduation rates between English language learners (ELLs) and English-proficient students (NYSED, 2014b).
They argue that requiring recently-arrived students to take an English Regents exam designed for native speakers who have grown up speaking, reading, and writing English unfairly sets up these students to fail and drop out. Graduation rates for English learners have been historically low — 46% graduated on time in 2020 in New York City, compared with 79% of all students citywide. Advocates and policy experts have cited many reasons, including that newer immigrant students might juggle work with school and lack of enough support in classrooms as they’re still learning the language.
