What is a cht?
Certified Hand Therapist – CHT
A hand therapist may achieve advanced certification as a certified hand therapist, referred to as a CHT. To obtain the CHT credential, a hand therapist must practice for a minimum of three years, accumulating at least 4,000 hours of treatment for hand and upper extremity disorders.
CHT exam scores are used by the Board of Nephrology Examiners Nursing and Technology (BONENT) as a uniform standard of qualification. While it may not be fair, all of a person’s plans for the future may be dependent upon needing a certain CHT exam score. The Certified Hemodialysis Technologist/Technician (CHT) Examination is quite simply an objective assessment of a test taker’s requisite foundation of knowledge and skills. Unfortunately, this hypothetical situation occurs all the time.
The Online Practice Examination for Hemodialysis Technologists/Technicians was developed by BONENT and conforms to the specifications of the CHT examination in terms of its content and average degree of difficulty. All eligibility criteria for recertification must be met by your certification expiration date. The provider of the continuing education program should be able to provide you with a duplicate certificate of completion. You will need copies of your certificates of completion for all continuing education programs reported on your recertification application.
Study advanced topics taught by the top instructors in hand therapy. You’ve spent too much time and money to become an Occupational Therapist to be unhappy with your career, not be able to find a great job, not work in the setting that you want, and not get the support that you need. Once your application and payment are received and approved, you will receive confirmation and details regarding how to schedule your examination appointment. To register for the exam, you must first submit an application to BONENT.
Some outpatient practices offer mentor opportunities, but it’s not always easy to find these types of jobs. The pay is sometimes lower, because they’re providing training. Many people will tell you that it’s difficult to get a job without certification, but this is not true.
Education must either be completed through approved sources or completed in specific categories. You may have a therapist or physician sign form 1 to verify hours worked. For PPE candidates, your exam results will be sent through the mail about 3-4 weeks after your test date. CBT candidates will receive an unofficial copy of their scores, including their pass/fail status, at the end of their exam at the test site. A current and valid driver’s license, passport, government-issued ID, or notarized photo with your name printed on the back are the only acceptable forms of ID. Once you have scheduled your exam, either PPE or CBT, you will receive a confirmation letter listing the address of your testing location.
Examination Content
To be eligible for the exam, you must have at least 6 months of nephrology patient care experience, and you must currently be active in an ESRD facility. If you are lacking experience in patient care, you can apply to take the exam within 2 years of completing a BONENT-approved educational program. This book covers 28 chapters encompassing topics relevant to an upper extremity therapist. Yes, a current, or previous supervisor will need to verify 3000 hours of dialysis technician work experience during your 3-year certification period.

Michelle was inspired to become an Occupational Therapist because she wanted to help people become as independent as possible. She earned her Master of Occupational Therapy from the University of Puget Sound and is currently working toward taking the Certified Hand Therapy (CHT) exam. At OPT, Michelle appreciates the great variety of people she gets to work with and the daily opportunities to see her patients improve.
This certification is designed to recognize the knowledge and skills of dialysis professionals who have achieved a high level of competency in the field. The certification requires individuals to meet certain educational and clinical experience requirements and to pass a comprehensive written examination. The CHT certification is a valuable asset to those seeking employment in the field of dialysis and is a mark of excellence for those who have achieved it. We work with the best and brightest hand therapists to deliver top-notch care to our patients. IRG works to support our hand therapists at every stage of their journey — whether you’re thinking about becoming a CHT, studying for the exam, or have been a certified hand therapist for years. The Certified Hand Therapy Exam Course gives a thorough overview of the diagnostic and intervention methods used in upper extremity rehabilitation for common diseases.
In addition, both occupational therapists and physical therapists now enter practice with a graduate degree instead of a bachelor degree. Hand therapy is the art and science of rehabilitation of the upper limb, which includes the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder girdle. It is a merging of occupational therapy and physical therapy theory and practice that combines comprehensive knowledge of the structure of the upper limb with function and activity. Applicants must also meet all training and experience requirements of the “CMS Conditions for Coverage for End Stage Renal Disease Facilities” in the state in which they aim to work.
Our courses satisfy NBCOT® Professional Development requirements. The new ESRD Rules & Regulations approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) published with comments in the Federal Register ( ).
Also, if the clinic or clinician has access to a Durable Medical Equipment (DME) License, insurances are more willing to reimburse fully for these services with hand therapy. To become competent in this arena, I had to take continuing education classes. While they were not extensively provided at the time, the courses out there were rigorous.
I also recommend taking online continuing education courses related to hands through platforms like MedBridge. OT school gives you a brief overview of working with hands but does not prepare you enough to go straight to a hand clinic without any relevant fieldwork experience. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in hand therapy, you will likely want to consider becoming a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) once you have met the requirements. On the day of the exam, you must arrive at the testing center minutes early to allow time for the check-in process. This process involves showing the testing center representative your confirmation notice and one form of valid photo ID. Change in the Hand Therapy Certification Examination eligibility requirement from five (5) years to three (3) years after certification or licensure as an occupational therapist or physical therapist.
The therapist must then pass a comprehensive exam of the advanced skills required to properly treat the upper extremity. Once certification is obtained, the therapist must then recertify every 5 years. This requires attendance of relevant continuing education courses and knowledge of advancements in clinical practice to stay current with the latest treatment options. A CHT is an occupational therapist or physical therapist who has a minimum of five years of clinical experience, including 4,000 hours or more in direct practice in hand therapy. In addition, the CHT has successfully passed a comprehensive test of advanced clinical skills and theory in upper quarter rehabilitation.
15 years later my most important memories are the time spent with my daughters, not the time lost as a CHT. The CHT exam is not an easy exam, and as such you’ll want to make sure you give yourself plenty of time to study. To put things into perspective, the pass rate in 2019 for first-time test takers averaged 57%. The path to become a Certified Hand Therapist is rigorous and requires additional steps above and beyond going to OT school and getting a job working as a hand therapist. Following application approval, your exam preparation resource materials will become available under “My Learning & Exams.” If your application is denied, you will be entitled to a refund of your entire package. This system takes your raw score (the number of questions you answered correctly) and converts it to a numerical score on a scale of 1 to 100.
