In terms of the vascular -interventional technology, you’ll need to know general knowledge in anatomy and physiology, patient management, and pathology. A compelling array of applications have been reported for interventional cardiovascular MRI in animal models. On the left, the heart is visualized in multiple concurrent imaging planes while a transaortic myocardial injection needle is manipulated. The distal end of the catheter is outside the selected imaging slice and is therefore not visible. On the right, projection mode is activated in the coronal view so that the entire length of the guiding catheter can be visualized. One active device, an “open loop” 0.030” x 100cm guidewire coil9,58,59, has US FDA approval to market for intravascular MR imaging. While it could be employed to deliver devices for therapeutic intravascular procedures, the receiver sensitivity of this design falls to zero at the tip, which limits its use in navigating diseased blood vessels.

This program is forImaging Technologist in Radiologic Technology, Nuclear Medicine, or Radiation Therapy seeking a post primary modality accreditation in Vascular Interventional Radiography. Current imaging students may also apply to this program in their final year of their Imaging program. Upon completing these courses, students should be able to evaluate VIR images as related to the exam requested and the pertinent clinical information and manipulate VIR instrumentation to produce the desired image results. Additionally, students should be able to identify pertinent anatomy on images in all of the various planes and relate pertinent pathology to appropriate scan protocols. These didactic courses are designed to prepare students to sit for the Advanced Certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Becoming a vascular interventional technologist entails education, specific skills, an understanding of the field and equipment, and certification. Therefore, earning a bachelor’s in imaging sciences can be the first step toward becoming a vascular technologist. Education is the first step toward a career in vascular interventional radiology. The program also offers six specialization tracks, including vascular interventional radiology. Radiologist assistants are experienced, registered radiographers who have obtained additional education and certification that qualifies them to serve as radiology extenders. They work under the supervision of a radiologist to provide patient care in the diagnostic imaging environment.

As illustrated below, professionals in this field use various technologies and imaging techniques to inform diagnoses and also assist physicians in viewing, navigating, and placing catheters in veins. The Cardiac and Vascular Imaging area of emphasis within the BS in Radiation Sciences (BSRS) program is a full-time, eighteen-month program that requires 6 quarters beginning in the summer. The VIR technologist uses radiation and advanced patient care skills to produce vascular images of the patient which are used by the physician to make a diagnosis. For the vast majority of the diagnostic procedures, the VIR technologist has total responsibility for the care and well-being of the patient and must be prepared to produce quality images with care and empathy.
