The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner manages the health care needs of the acutely, critically, or chronically ill patient in many different settings (inpatient to outpatient). I graduated with my MSN as an adult acute care nurse practitioner in December 2016 from the University of South Alabama with a specialization in cardiovascular medicine. Another available board exam review is through Fitzgerald and while I have not used it, some of my colleagues were pleased with the materials. There are two available board exams for the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner; one is through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and one through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN). The AGACNP-BC certification is longer than the ACNPC-AG exam at 175 scored questions and 25 pretest questions. Graduates of Adult Gerontology ACNP programs have two options for national board certification examination. These two credentials basically correspond to the specific board exam the NP took and passed. ACNPC-AG is a credential awarded by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. AGACNP-BC is a credential awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Other areas of practice assessed on the certification exams include professional issues, health promotion, and disease prevention.

You have to study, participate, and dig in to your clinical environment to obtain the most from the program. Recently, more Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are obtaining a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) or Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) as admission to practice. Someday, the doctorate is the gold standard for entry to becoming a Nurse Practitioner. In the past, Nurse Practitioners who obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) were grandfathered in. However, entry-level Nurse Practitioners are no longer permitted to start practicing as an NP with a BSN.
Since Acute Care NPs have a greater focus on the patient with an acute or critical illness, they provide a distinctive comfort in the inpatient setting. Some schools will require you to have worked with patients for a set length of time or have experience in a specific setting — such as critical care — before considering you for acceptance to an ACNP program. ACNP programs can be found across the country in both online and on-campus formats, or a combination of both. However, applicants should understand that several hundred hours of clinical time will be required for the completion of the program, and students will need to find a preceptor for that portion of training. Some schools will help students locate a preceptor and others will not.
