Parents do not have the right to decide the exact test the school will conduct, but they must give written permission for the area of testing. Most states use the same basic assessments, which makes it easier to move to another district and/or another state. The GARS consists of 42 clearly stated items that describe behaviors of people with ASD. Intelligence tests (often called IQ tests) most commonly used to diagnose a learning disability include the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence (WIPPSI), Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS).

What special education teachers are able to teach their students may range depending on the disabilities of the child.
