Parents do not have the right to decide the exact test the school will conduct, but they must give written permission for the area of testing. Most states use the same basic assessments, which makes it easier to move to another district and/or another state. The GARS consists of 42 clearly stated items that describe behaviors of people with ASD. The tool is comprised of three subscales that look at stereotypical behaviors, communication, and social interaction. There is also a structured interview form that gathers information from parents. The ADOS is a semi-structured assessment that includes a variety of activities that are used to observe social and communication behaviors.
But there are things that we can do to help prepare our students for this season. We can teach them test taking strategies for the special education classroom. With open enrollment, you can start anytime and train at your own pace to become a special education teacher in your state.

The evaluation process can create lots of different emotions for families. But after the evaluation, they should have a clear picture of their child’s strengths and challenges and an understanding of how to help their child thrive. For example, if the 30 calendar days fall during the summer when school is not in session, the ARD committee has until the first instructional day of the fall semester to finalize initial eligibility decisions.
Such children may be eligible for protection given by other laws such as Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. A child with a 504 plan still receives needed assistance to address disability-related educational needs—just not under IDEA. This is because there are many children with disabilities that don’t necessarily require extra educational assistance or individualized educational programming. IDEA is quite particular about covering children who, by reason thereof or due to their disability, need special education and related services. Rather, the child must not only have a disability that falls under a specific disability category, they must also need special education and related services by reason thereof.
Observation and comparison of the student with and without the use AT tools should be completed. Assessment for AT usage in setting and context (classroom, home, other) needs to be completed. Also, a review of AT tools for reliability, compatibility with other technologies, ease of operation, staff familiarity with AT use and function, visual/auditory output, etc., must be completed.

It includes a teacher and parent inventory for ages 6-17, and an additional self- report for students aged 8-17. Through normed individual achievement testing, the Brigance provides diagnostic information on reading, math and other academic skills.
What special education teachers are able to teach their students may range depending on the disabilities of the child. Those with severe cognitive, emotional, or physical disabilities may be taught life skills and basic literacy, while those with mild or moderate disabilities may be taught the general education curriculum with modifications. Either way, being a special education teacher is an admirable and necessary occupation.

Fluency affects reading comprehension because a student needs to read fluently in order to understand what he/she is reading. If the student reads too fast, he/she may miss important information and details. If the student reads too slow, then he/she is more likely to forget what was read at the beginning of the story or passage.

If you have a visual learner, you might need to use graphic organizers, pictures, etc. If you have a kinesthetic learner, however, you can use counting blocks or physical items that are small and can be easily moved. It is important to note that students might need more than one strategy to use, especially for more complex math problems.
