While the National Society for Histotechnology (HST), a participating society with ASCP, strongly recommends certification, it’s worth noting that not all medical laboratory positions require histology certification. If you pass the exam, you will receive a wall certificate sent to the main address on your application within a few months. Additionally, you may request to send a verification of your certification to a third party that requests it, such as an employer or your state licensing board. Route 3 requires the same educational attainment as Route 2, as well as the successful completion of a 50-week US military histotechnician training course within the last ten years.
Comments will appear on provider bios only if providers have a minimum number of comments. This job may be removed from posting boards and filled anytime after the minimum posting period has ended. Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) offers global certification for medical laboratory professionals. Since 1928, the ASCP has set high professional competency standards and certified more than 600,000 laboratory professionals. To become certified, an individual must fulfill the academic and experience/training components specified in the Procedures for Examination and Certification and successfully complete the appropriate examination.
There is also an increased need for prenatal testing for genetic conditions. Medical laboratory technologists and technicians, including histology technicians, will be in demand to operate the equipment needed for diagnosis and treatment. NSH’s HT Prep Course includes 8 1/2 hours of webinar instruction, covering topics on the HT exam, including Fixation & Processing, Microtomy, Staining, Special Stains, IHC, and Lab Math. The course is broken down into modules, with a knowledge check after each module. This is a perfect resource for histologists trained on the job, who need a refresher prior to the exam, but can also serve as a good review for graduated histology program students. The course is available for purchase on the NSH Online Learning Center, just $249 for NSH members.
To pass, the computer must serve you a question with a difficulty rating of at least 400 as your final question. You will be asked to leave your personal belongings in a small locker outside the testing room, including your smartphone, smartwatch, or other such items. Applications will be processed within 60 business days upon receipt, and you must submit your supporting documents within business days from the submission of your application. Note that the Histotechnician (HT) Exam is different than the Histotechnologist (HTL) Exam. Pay ranges for people with an ASCP Certified Histotechnician (HT) certification by employer. Certificants share how the ASCP BOC has been a guiding light in laboratory medicine for 90 years.
They will also use biometric technology to capture a palm-vein image, which ensures that each examinee only has a single record in the system to safeguard the integrity of the exam. To register online, you must first log in to your account on the ASCP website or register for a new one if you don’t have an account yet. Make sure to use a valid email address when creating your account since you will be receiving important communication regarding your exam through your specified email.

I invite them to visit my lab to see what we do and how essential histopathology is to everyday life. This way, they can learn about histology and see if it’s a good fit for them. I’ve also had the honor of collaborating with many institutions and industries around the world. This furthered my outreach and created a resourceful network to help upcoming clinical researchers. BioCare Medical values the diversity of individuals, ideas, and perspectives, and what they bring to the workplace. To be eligible for the exam, candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements set forth by the ASCP BOC. These requirements may include a combination of academic coursework, clinical training, and professional experience in the field of histotechnology. They play a crucial role in diagnosing and treating diseases by turning tissue samples into microscope slides. Once a tissue sample is taken from a patient, histology technicians are responsible for taking the sample and creating slides.
We are committed to providing programs and services that are guided by Barry University’s rich educational mission and intended to enhance your Barry experience. Through partnerships with others in the university community, we aim to create experiences that will help transform you into leaders for a just and humane world. Three classes per year are accepted, one in Spring, one in Summer, and one in Fall.
I show them that histology is more of a work of art than a field of study. The exam questions that may be presented will either be theoretical or procedural. Theoretical questions test the skills needed to apply knowledge, calculate results, and correlate reactions/patient results to histology. Procedural questions, on the other hand, measure the skills necessary to perform appropriate laboratory methods and follow quality assurance protocols. Regulatory questions that are based on US sources (e.g., AABB, FDA, CLIA, etc.) will also be asked in the examination. The program’s curriculum includes coursework in histology; histotechnology theory; histotechnology practice; laboratory techniques; and a practicum.
How long does it take to get HT certification?
The certificate program in histotechnology is a NAACLS accredited 24 credit hour, two semester program that provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to sit for the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) histotechnian (HT) or histotechnologist (HTL) certification exam.

After this, you must submit the required documentation to support your eligibility, including training certifications, accomplished experience forms, letters, official transcripts, etc. All documents must be in PDF format and must contain original, handwritten signatures; digital signatures are not allowed. It is recommended that you submit these electronically through their website. However, you will be tested on your ability to apply laboratory mathematics. Specifically, the questions will cover the metric system, percent solutions and dilutions, and molar solutions.
Meet regularly with staff, technical directors and senior management to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues. Performs advanced/specialized tests and other related laboratory techniques. Re-evaluates methodology and makes recommended changes to assist in test interpretation. Determines if further testing should be done on samples or if test should be repeated. Performs duties of technologist as necessitated by absence or peak workload. The ASCP HT exam is designed for individuals who have completed an accredited histotechnology program, possess relevant work experience, or have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

At the start of my career, I was the point of contact for anatomical and physiological research. I needed to know as much as the pathologists to troubleshoot issues and optimize results for routine and non-routine specimens. I took time with each department to learn the ins and outs of their research. I met with pathologists and principal investigators to familiarize myself with all of their histological goals. I was committed to gaining as much knowledge as I could in each area of interest. I’m a perfectionist, so I meticulously set aside time to gather as much information as possible.
Students are given the space for discussion and debate and the opportunity to learn from experts in their fields. The Office of Financial Aid can assist with determining eligibility for the Honors Program. Histology technicians need to have strong fine motor skills and be incredibly detail oriented. Knowledge of biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology is essential for success in this role.

The BOC works closely with subject matter experts and industry professionals to ensure the exam content is relevant, up-to-date, and reflects current best practices in the field of histotechnology. Most histology technicians become certified through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and practice under the credentials of HT(ASCP). Applicants are strongly recommended to research the licensing requirements unique to the states in which they will work.
The non-refundable application fee for recertification is $95 every three years with a $15 reduced fee schedule for multiple certification holders. The curriculum of this program includes courses such as histological techniques; microanatomy; professional development; histochemical staining; histology clinical rotation; microanatomy; and histology enrichment. In this nine-month hybrid program, students learn how to embed, cut, stain, and prepare a tissue sample for review under a microscope. The program is divided into three parts with 50 percent of the time spent in clinical settings, 25 percent of the time spent in laboratories, and 25 percent of the time spent in the classroom.
