Some hygiene programs have the whole class take the exam all at once around March (this was the case for many RDH years ago). What I’m saying is, if you have the choice to decide when to take the exam, know yourself, and make the decision for yourself (whether that be taking it early or after graduation). I would recommend if you decide to take it after graduation, do not take too long.
After taking the examination, if you have concerns about scheduling issues, exam conditions or any unresolved problems, inform the Pearson VUE test administrator before leaving the test center. The Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE) is the governing body for the NBDHE, working in collaboration with the Department of Testing Services (DTS). You can study day and night for weeks, but if you walk into the exam thinking you’re going to fail, you’re doing yourself a great disservice. These investigations have found no meaningful differences between these sets of forms. In order to take the test, you’ll have to obtain a “DENTPIN” from the ADA to prove you’re qualified to sit for the exam and then move on to the remainder of the application process. The DENTPIN allows you to log in to register for the actual exam. You will need to select a testing date and register in time to ensure that there is a spot available to take your exam. Depending on the testing center that you select, you may be able to choose from various dates to take your test. Some CEs are FREE, such as those sponsored by dental product manufacturers. If you attend a dental seminar or conference, you’ll likely need to pay a registration fee and then choose between free/paid courses on top of that. Dental conferences are a convenient way to catch up on all of your in-person learning requirements, since you can attend classes back-to-back over a couple of days. The college program you enroll in significantly affects whether you pass the NBDHE. Quality programs will prepare you for the exam more effectively.
The minimum scaled score is 49, and the maximum scaled score is 99. Results are mailed within six to eight weeks after the completion of the examination. Those who fail to receive an acceptable passing score of 75 may take the test again, but three failures on the test set a precondition of a one-year wait before the individual can take the test again. An additional 150 multiple-choice questions are presented in the second component of the test. This second set of questions, however, is based on case studies of between 12 and 15 individual samples. The dental hygiene examinee must answer this second set of questions based on the conditions presented in the case study samples.
When you put it all together—the right tools, the right people, and the right mindset—you set yourself up to pass the NBDHE. Yes, getting through dental hygiene school and board exams is tough, but if you put in the hard work and don’t make excuses, you’ll be rewarded. Try not to stay on one question for too long; remember it is timed! When taking the exam on a testing center computer, you are allowed a whiteboard (or paper) that is given to you so you can write whatever you want on there. You can flag questions to remind you to go back to that specific questions. That’s what I did, and it can make you second guess yourself.
