Major assessments and due dates will be announced at least five days in advance. Course CreditsStudents are required to earn eight English credits to graduate from high school. You don’t have to study for hours every night, but giving yourself enough lead time before the test means you’ll have more flexibility in the amount of time you spend on each unit.
The Latin, German, Greek, and Hebrew language exams were removed after the 2009–10 school year, and the remaining language exams (Italian, Spanish, and French) were removed after the 2010–11 school year. Previously, a Regents foreign language exam was an option that would allow for Regents Exam with Advanced Designation. Currently, local school districts can develop their own exams to assess foreign language competency and allow for students to meet the Advanced Designation requirement. The best way to study for the ELA Regents is to take old Regents tests. Thankfully, the New York State Education Department puts years of old exams (all the way back to 2014) online for you to practice from, as well as their corresponding scoring key and conversion chart.
Adopting the right attitude, getting enough rest before the exam, and putting yourself in a calm, relaxed mindset are crucial to maximizing your performance on the test. Thorough English Regents prep will also boost your confidence and help you achieve this mindset.
This question asks you to recognize in the sequence of stanzas the overall structure of the poem as a series of examples. Here you are expected to consider how figurative language contributes to the meaning of a poem. In this case, the poet concludes with images of human perception of time as only a simile. This question asks you to identify the tone of the passage and to consider the last line of the stanza as a comment on how humans perceive time. This question requires further analysis of how characters are introduced and developed.
To graduate, students are required to have earned appropriate credits in a number of specific subjects by passing year-long or half-year courses, after which they must pass at least five Regents examinations in some of the subject areas. For higher-achieving students, a Regents with Advanced designation and an Honors designation are also offered. Students with disabilities or enrolled in an English as a Second Language program are able to earn a local diploma. While the subject-content Regents exams are not intended to gauge English proficiency, the English Language Arts exam is intended to ensure that a student has achieved a certain level in reading and writing English.
If you’re in middle school or high school in New York State, chances are that you’ve heard of the NYSED Regents exams. In fact, all NY public high school students have to take (and pass) a certain number of these exams to graduate from high school. You need a working definition, which is a little different from a dictionary definition.
Our practice tests simulate the real thing in a number of key ways:
To graduate in New York State, high school students must pass five Regents exams — in English, math, global history, U.S. history and government, and a science. Of the more than 310,380 high school students in New York City, an estimated 36,867 of them, or 12 percent, are students who are in the process of learning English. Then, you must take a position on the question and compose an evidence-based argument supported by your analysis of the texts, using valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence from at least three of the texts. An effective essay of argument must clearly establish a claim that can be sufficiently supported with reliable evidence. The organization must be clear and coherent, and the writing is expected to demonstrate command of standard written English.
In all academic subjects, students will be expected to build their knowledge primarily through engaging directly with text. Read through our guides on what high school students should do over the summer (besides summer assignments), including pre-college summer programs, SAT/ACT boot camp, or getting a job. As a NY public school student, Regents are an inescapable fact of life, but you can use them to your advantage. The requirements for which and how many NYS Regents exams you need to graduate (and how well you need to do on the exams) depend on what kind of diploma you’ll be graduating with. Remember, our focus on high-stakes testing doesn’t stop our grade-abated work.
(1) The growing disposition to tax more and more heavily large estates (2) left at death is a cheering indication of the growth of a salutary¹ change (3) in public opinion. The State of Pennsylvania now takes—subject to some (4) exceptions—one-tenth of the property left by its citizens. The budget (5) presented inthe British Parliament the other day proposes to increase the (6) death-duties; and, most significant of all, the new tax is to be a graduated (7) one. By taxing estates heavily at death the state marks its condemnation (12) of the selfish millionaire’s unworthy life. Here you are asked to determine a central idea and understand its development over the course of the text.

These are reading, research, thinking, and writing skills that high school students are expected to demonstrate across the curriculum. In academic writing, an argument is usually a central idea, often called a claim or thesis statement, which is backed up with evidence that supports the idea. Much of the writing high school students do in their English courses constitutes essays of argument, in contrast to personal essays, descriptive pieces, or works of imagination. This book provides a detailed guide to the Regents ELA Exam, showing you exactly what each part of the exam looks like. Actual passages and multiple-choice questions, with analysis of the multiple-choice questions and guidelines for composing written responses, are included. For your review, you will find a chapter on Reviewing Literary Elements and Techniques and detailed Glossaries of Terms that review structure and language in prose and poetry.

(57)An indescribable oppression, which seemed to generate in some (58) unfamiliar part of her consciousness, filled her whole being with a vague (59) anguish. It was like a shadow, like a mist passing across her soul’s summer (60) day. She did not sit there (61) inwardly upbraiding⁵ her husband, lamenting at Fate, which had directed (62) her footsteps to the path which they had taken.
Though all public schools are required to follow either the Regents Exam system or some form of alternative assessment, private schools need not. The vast majority of private schools do use Regents exams and award Regents diplomas, but some, usually academically prestigious private schools, do not. These schools’ argument is that their own diploma requirements exceed Regents standards. Schools run by the Society of Jesus, such as Canisius High School, Fordham Prep, McQuaid Jesuit, Regis and Xavier, and by the Society of Mary (Marianists), such as Chaminade and Kellenberg, have not used Regents exams for decades. The Masters School, The Ursuline School, The Hackley School, The Harvey School, Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School, Manlius Pebble Hill School, and Nichols School also do not use the Regents system.

Opponents of this idea say that creating different standards for English-language learners does them a disservice by not preparing them as well as those students who are native English-speakers. Advocates of the alternative test counter that an alternative exam would set an appropriately high standard that reflects the background and experiences of recently-arrived students. They argue that requiring recently-arrived students to take an English Regents exam designed for native speakers who have grown up speaking, reading, and writing English unfairly sets up these students to fail and drop out. Like many of her high school classmates, Sharzina Halim, a senior at Curtis High School in Staten Island, will be taking her Regents exams in early June, and she is nervous about them. English Regents tutoring sessions are the perfect place to learn how to outline your thoughts, allowing you or your child to visualize what you need to say before you actually start saying it.

The only thing to be cautious of is overloading yourself, particularly if you have final exams in addition to the Regents in a particular subject. Speaking as someone who took the US History Regents, US History AP, and US History SAT Subject Test all within a month of each other at the end of junior year, burnout can be a very real thing. Even if you’re someone who wakes up at the same time every day without an alarm, though, getting a good night’s rest leading up to a test will magnify the results of your studying. Personally, I’ve found that getting a good night’s sleep two days before the test is also critical, but you may find your body works differently. Spreading out your studying also means you’ll be sleeping in between studying, which will help cement your memory of all that information you’re reading and quizzing yourself on.
