While this is not a teacher licensure program, we may be able to help you prepare for provisional licensure in the state of Massachusetts. Also, if you work in a Massachusetts community-based early education center, each center has specific requirements for each level of certification (Infant-toddler Teacher, Infant-toddler Lead Teacher, Preschool Teacher, Preschool Lead Teacher, Director I, and Director II). Please contact your Supervisor or Human Resources Office to determine what coursework would benefit you.

A minimum of 50% of the major courses must be completed through Liberty University. Candidates should speak with the Registrar’s Office for further information regarding transfer credit policies. Our program will prepare you to work with young children from birth through kindergarten. Once admitted into the program, you may be employed as a fully qualified teacher in Kentucky schools.

Field Experience II, usually taken during the first semester of your senior year, also provides up to 8 hours each week teaching science and mathematics to students in a classroom setting. At University of the Cumberlands, we’re here to help you help even the littlest ones find learning success through our early childhood education bachelor’s degree online program. With the exception of field/clinical and student teaching hours, this online early childhood education degree program provides the convenience and flexibility needed to pursue a teaching degree in early childhood settings on your schedule and at your pace. During your junior and senior years, you will have increased opportunities to engage in field experience courses that allow you to spend time each week in an elementary classroom. Field Experience I, typically completed in the second semester of junior year, includes up to 8 hours each week in which you will be working directly with students in a classroom setting. This course provides a focus on literacy skills and social studies content.

The Master of Arts in Teaching in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education program prepares students to meet the requirements for certification and/or licensure. If you plan to pursue professional licensure or certification you should first determine your state’s criteria for examination and licensure to see how/if our program meets those requirements prior to enrollment. We recommend that you also contact your state’s licensing board directly to verify that the requirements have not changed recently and to answer any questions especially those regarding additional requirements beyond the degree.
Prospective graduate students should contact the appropriate department for more information. You will learn to develop age-appropriate lesson plans; assess child behavior; plan, implement, and monitor interventions, and assist families. You will learn to consider all aspects of the child’s environment – home, school, and neighborhood.
The supportive faculty in the Department of Education Studies is highly qualified to prepare you for success in the classroom – but it is equally important for you to develop your own teaching style. Beginning with your first semester, you will have the opportunity to observe effective teachers and lead activities in authentic school settings. Students are expected to complete the graduate admissions process during the fall of their senior year. (See the Radford University Graduate Catalog for further details.) In addition, students must apply to the Teacher Education Program (see admission procedure  for details). Upon admission to the Teacher Education Program, students will do their student teaching experiences with children in early childhood and early childhood special education settings. In addition to becoming a preschool teacher or child care provider, an early childhood education degree can also lead to becoming a nanny.
No matter the subject, no teacher can educate professionally without first earning the proper certification. In the case of most early childhood educators across the United States, this involves earning a passing score on the Praxis Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education practice test. At time of admission to the program, candidates will be eligible to be employed with temporary provisional certification. Candidates must complete the IECE certification program and KTIP within three years of initial hire with temporary provisional certification. If candidates fail to complete the program and KTIP, they will no longer be highly qualified for IECE.

Programs

Through the UWW Interdisciplinary Studies, you can also tailor your degree to your professional interests with online courses in multicultural education, early childhood curriculum, reading, math and science methods, inclusion, and children’s behavior and behavior management. Then, every five years you need only complete the minimum requirements and you will be set to renew whenever you need to. The minimum requirements require you to have been actively teaching 3 of the 5 years you held your licensure. You may also use 6 semester hours of college credit or 15 hours of graduate credit to cover this requirement. Another point that you have to keep in mind is that the teacher preparation program that you must apply for certification within 5 years of completing your teacher preparation program or meet other course requirements within that time. This is to ensure that your degree is up-to-date with the newest technology and methodology when you are certified to be a teacher.

In the Department of Education Studies, you will earn a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (BSIS) degree. This well-rounded interdisciplinary major includes courses in early childhood, elementary education, content area methods, literacy and much more. It is designed to equip you with all you need to teach and engage young learners.
