We work with institutional partners to offer a wide array of practice tests that will help you prepare for your big exam. No matter how niche your field of interest might be, we’re here to help you prepare for test day. All of these changes will still take time to implement, but the new framework will guide the development of competent and work-ready nurses who are better prepared for long-term success in the field. When she was studying to become a nurse, Katie Robinson, PhD, RN-BC, CHPN, didn’t know what kind of nursing she wanted to practice. The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, also called UT Health San Antonio, is a leading academic health center with a mission to make lives better through excellence in advanced academics, life-saving research and comprehensive clinical care including health, dental and cancer services. The former discusses how to become a leader among nurses, and how to interact with other healthcare providers when discussing care, performance, and other concerns. The latter not only covers professional conduct, but also includes information about the updated ethics standards that are being implemented. This is seen by many educators as a major step toward more competency-based education. Leveraging this update, nursing educators can develop consistent and competency-based programs more fully.

Our Program Chair, Dr. Julie Janecek, has assembled workshops and special educational events consistent with AACN’s promotion of “Excellence in Clinical Practice.” Information of scientific and practical professional relevance will meet the interests of clinicians, researchers, and educators at all levels in their careers. Students will also find interest in presentations regarding professional development and future neuropsychological practice in an age of advancing technology. The meeting of these two great neurological organizations took place against the backdrop of beautiful Jeju Island, a favorite destination for Koreans, as well as a source of pride, with its having been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage natural site. It also prepared the organizations to further advance their joint work at the 2015 AANS Annual Scientific Meeting in impressive Washington, D.C., which featured a collaboration with the AASNS and highlighted the most renowned Asian and Australasian neurosurgeons in the scientific program. Robert Harbaugh, MD, FAANS; Christopher Loftus, MD, FAANS; and Anil Nanda, MD, MPH, FAANS, spoke on behalf of the AANS and shared with symposium attendees updates on the AANS International Programs and other important components, including the Neurosurgery Research & Education Foundation (NREF) and NeuroPoint Alliance (NPA).
Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, they have also started a scholarship program to help students that need financial support in order to complete their nursing programs and/or meet life expenses. Eileen Breslin was instrumental in advancing AACN’s mission and priorities during her 12 years of service on the board of directors. She was on the board when AACN endorsed the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, initiated the clinical nurse leader role, re-envisioned our approach to leadership development, and realigned our priorities to focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. AACN is proud to honor Dr. Breslin with the 2022 Sister Bernadette Armiger Award in recognition of her visionary leadership that will shape the future of nursing education and practice,” said AACN President and CEO Deborah Trautman, PhD, RN, FAAN.
The AACN toolkit delineates the 5 competencies necessary for baccalaureate nurses to provide culturally competent care. Important definitions, concepts, nursing models, strategies and resources are identified. The resource clearly explains the Campinha-Bacote Model, Giger and Davidhizer’s Model of Transcultural Nursing, Leninger’s Cultural Care and Universality Theory Model, Purnell’s Model of Transcultural Healthcare, and Specter’s Health Transitions Model. The toolkit also offers references to current nursing research in the area of cultural competence. The toolkit provides links to journals, websites, and professional organizations that are useful in teaching cultural competence.
Rutgers’ health equity program was developed with the support of a $600,000 grant from the US Department of Education’s International and Foreign Language Education office. As institutions begin the process of implementing the new Essentials, many will look to a phased approach. Newly updated materials will be available to help nursing educators meet the needs of the new framework. The AACN’s new nursing education framework covers 10 distinct domains and integrates eight concepts throughout these domains.

The update also helps make nursing education more available to minorities and lower-income populations. A larger aim is for all health professional students within participating institutions to achieve a familiarity with and understanding of what palliative care is—and is not. “There are lot of misconceptions, even among health professionals,” Dr. Erikson says. Having nurses feel more comfortable with this subject matter, wherever they are at, is important. Attendees to AACN NTI 2022 will have the opportunity to participate in nearly 300 different live sessions dedicated to cutting-edge topics in today’s high-acuity nursing environment. I told her that this a goal for palliative care – to provide the best care possible, spare patients and caregivers unnecessary stress, and improve quality of life. This conversation was timely as it occurred just prior to the National Symposium for Academic Palliative Care Education and Research which was held March 2-3, 2023, in Long Beach, CA. The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has implemented a new model and framework for training registered nurses, advanced practice nurses, and nurse specialists. Previous reports have shown that pancreatic cancer was induced preferentially in male versus female azaserine-treated rats.
This study was designed to determine the importance of estrogen and testosterone in this phenomenon. Fischer (F344) rats received a single injection of azaserine (30 mg/kg) at 21 days of age. At 28 days of age, they were weaned and divided into 12 groups of 9-10 rats as shown below. All drugs (estradiol, the antiestrogen tamoxifen, testosterone propionate and/or the antiandrogen flutamide) were administered, starting at weaning, in 3-week timed-release pellets until autopsy. The pancreas was weighed and prepared for quantitative histologic analysis of atypical acinar cell nodules (AACNs) which are putative preneoplastic lesions. In intact female rats, AACN burden was smaller than in intact males (P less than 0.05).
The Institute engages a wide variety of palliative care professionals, subject matter experts, clinical leaders, consultants, and writers who help to develop and review our curriculum, serve as adjunct faculty, and/or write articles or eBooks that highlight palliative care best practices. As America’s health care system confronts its history of inequity and bias at all levels, the Shiley Haynes Institute’s upcoming Annual Symposium will offer attendees an opportunity to explore these issues for hospice and palliative care professionals in the context of community and community building. AACN’s four core spheres for professional nursing practice are disease prevention/promotion of health and well-being; chronic disease care; regenerative or restorative care—and hospice/palliative/supportive/end-of-life care. This elevates the care models and settings targeted by the Institute and its primary audience to a more central place in the curriculum. She also oversaw the development of Wellness 360, the School of Nursing’s clinical practice.
“I look forward to furthering the mission of this wonderful organization” Markert said. “It is an honor to represent UAB Neurosurgery in this national position, and I hope to build on the successes of past presidents-elect while also forming a new legacy for the AAcNS.” Pass your upcoming exam with Pocket Prep or we will provide you with three additional months of access to Premium Prep for free. As the host, the AASNS invited the AANS to collaborate and held an AASNS-AANS Partnership Symposium where leadership and meeting attendees studied the history of the two organizations and talked about ways to collaborate into the future. The AASNS is the largest continental society of neurological surgeons in the world, covering 46 countries and 60 percent of the world’s population. This collaboration makes international connections with half of the world’s neurosurgeons possible and helps the neurosurgical community to become aware of the diversity of neurological care throughout the world. The AACN has recognized that such comprehensive changes to nursing education will take time to implement. It initially laid out a time of 3 years when the framework was first adopted, and it noted that schools might need longer than that to fully transition their programs.
UT Health San Antonio’s magazines chronicle the extraordinary efforts made by so many in service to our community. The award honors nurse leaders who have made significant contributions to the AACN, its goals, nursing education and the advancement of the nursing profession.
