The psychometrist may only perform duties under the general supervision of licensed/certified neuropsychologists, school psychologists, and clinical psychologists. The supervising neuropsychologist/psychologist provides technical and clinical guidance and uses the assessments and reports that the psychometrist performs and prepares to assist in diagnosing and preparing treatment plans and recommendations for clients. Psychometrists’ assessments and records are also used to advance the field by using the test data for research. Knowledge and skills are developed through integrated coursework, lab, and practicum experiences. Students complete a four-quarter sequential program of study, beginning in the summer quarter. In general, the majority of employers favor individuals who have obtained a master’s degree in psychology, educational science, or both in an area of study known as educational psychology or research in psychology.
Individuals who hold a master’s degree (AA Teacher License) and desire to add psychometry licensure must complete the prescribed program on the following page. In Christian counseling is designed for ministers who are exempt from licensure requirements. No more than six semester hours may be transferred from other institutions for the 36-hour program.

This in effect has opened the door for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and eventually other insurance carriers, to take a closer look at how psychometrists are credentialed. It is only a matter of time before CMS will mandate a minimum credential in order to qualify for reimbursement of psychometrist services (test administration time) – as has happened with other technologist professions. The Praxis I test is required for the Psychometry credential and a passing score on the Praxis I and Praxis II are required for Class AAA and Class AAAA. All application materials must be received by the March 1 deadline for consideration of an interview for admission to the program. Candidates are required to apply for the Pre-Residency Clearance in Washington State through the Eastern Washington University (EWU) Certification Office during the first quarter of the program, which includes fingerprinting and background checks.

Students accepted into the PhD program in School Psychology should either hold a master’s degree in school psychology/psychometry or obtain AA licensure in school psychometry within the first three years in the program. For students entering with a baccalaureate degree, the program requires at least five years of full time study (i.e., fall, spring, and summer semesters), which begins in the fall semester and culminates in a full year internship experience. A minimum of 120 hours beyond the baccalaureate degree is required to earn a doctorate from the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology, and Foundations. Interviews clients and determines the type of psychometric measures to be performed to fill the particular needs of the clients. Reviews medical histories; consults with medical staff, psychologists, counselors, teachers, and other personnel.
