I felt badly leaving my patients in Nebraska, but was compelled to move to Spokane, Washington, in 1992 to take advantage of the Nurse Practice Act. In Spokane, I established the first independent rural psychiatric clinic owned and operated by ARNPs. It was then I realized that the heart and soul of advanced practice psychiatric-mental health nursing is the fact we are NURSES first. When in doubt, I relied on my nursing skills to pull me through and do what was best for the patient. Her published contributions and presentations across disciplines in the field of pediatric bipolar disorder have shaped the understanding of pediatric bipolar illness and effective treatments for families affected early in life. Beyond her scholarly presentations Dr. Carbray has been an invited speaker for the executive team of the American Girl Company and has been interviewed on mental health and youth across print and social media including Seventeen magazine.

Laura completed her DNP with a minor in Nursing Education at University of Missouri-Columbia in 2016. Previously, she had completed a MSN FNP at Old Dominion University in 1995. Subsequently she completed a post-Master’s program in the adult PMHCNS/NP program at University of Missouri-Columbia in 2007.

Dr. Marta E. Vives is an Advanced Practice Nurse, board certified as an adult and child adolescent psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist and family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. Dr. Vives earned her Master of Science in Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist in 2002 from George Mason University, Fairfax Virginia, her DNP from University of Tennessee, Memphis TN. Vives’ clinical practice focuses on providing evaluation, management (psychopharmacology) and psychotherapy for adults, adolescents and children with mental health problems. Michelle Malnati PMHCNS, BC, & PPCNP, BC, is a dual certified clinical nurse specialist in both child and adolescent mental health as well as a pediatric nurse practitioner. Michelle provides psychopharmacological treatment for clients ages 5 to 25.
The Psychiatric Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (PMHCNS-BC) certification and credential are available for renewal only from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). You can renew this certification every 5 years and continue to use the credential by maintaining your license to practice and fulfilling the certification renewal requirements in effect at the time you submit your application. Joy has received numerous awards for her work in the community with vulnerable populations. Beeber’s team contributed early data to document how mild to severe maternal depressive symptoms beyond the postpartum era could negatively impact the neurocognitive development in high-risk infants and toddlers from intrauterine life to three years of age. Laura Thiem joined the UMKC faculty in 2014 teaching advanced health assessment, clinical practicum along with other clinical courses in the FNP and PMHNP programs.

The ANCC Adult Psychiatric and Mental Health CNS Certification Exam is developed and administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA). The ANCC is responsible for setting the eligibility criteria, providing study materials, administering the exam, and awarding the certification to successful candidates. They also ensure that the exam accurately reflects the current practices and standards in adult psychiatric and mental health care. When looking for a mental health provider, probably most importantly, question them about their experience. Personally, I would feel more comfortable with a provider who has 20+ years of experience than someone just out of school.
