The exam is 90 questions multiple choice and you need a 70% or better to pass. It is a two-hour timed exam and you cannot use any notes, books or study materials. Exam accommodations can be made for language as well as disabilities. A paper dictionary translating English to your primary language is allowed if notified prior to the exam. No electronic devices are allowed to be used at any time during the exam.

Join us for the ServSafe® Food Protection Manager Certification in-person class and exam. Regulatory requirements may vary, be sure to review class schedule for any hour requirements for your state. We use the ServSafe® Manager 7th Edition for all class instructions.
The Food Handler Certificate will require the learner to complete a brief 2-hour training course covering basic food safety principles. At the conclusion of the course, the learner will be tested on their knowledge of the content and learning outcomes. Upon successfully passing the exam, the learner will be issued a Food Handler’s Certificate document (or card). In other states, “food handler” means your typical kitchen or food service employee, and the training certificate involves learning how to follow food safety protocols.
Instead, an Indiana Food Handler license has the same requirements as what other states call a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM). Whether you have been certified in the past or are coming for initial certification, Penn State Extension’s focus is on education. Therefore, our policy is that you must complete some type of course work prior to taking the exam, whether you have been certified in the past or not. The FDA Food Code, which serves as the basis for food safety regulations, is updated on a regular basis and things do change over time. Once you pass your exam you will receive a Food Manager Certificate which will prove to your manager or local health inspector that you have the mandatory certification required. ServSafe Certification supports all those who are preparing for certification as a Food Safety Manager. The only requirement is to pass an exam from an approved provider such as ServSafe. Premier Food Safety does recommend online training and reading the study guide before attending an exam. This program will teach or reiterate responsible food safety principles to the learner. A Food Manager, sometimes referred to as a Food Protection Manager or a Food Safety Manager, is one of the most important individuals you can have in your kitchen or food processing facility.
Until the changes are implemented, the current requirement remains in effect. To receive and maintain certification, individuals are required to pass a certification exam every five (5) years. After you pass the test, you’ll receive your food handlers card.

In July, the Indiana State Department of Health enacted a new law that requires entities that sell and handle food, such as home baked goods, to have a ServSafe certificate.
