To be certified you must pass an ANSI/CFP nationally accredited exam once every 5 years. To prepare for the exam, most individuals take a class (in person or on-line) or self-study. Exams are proctored and must be taken either at an approved testing site or are given at the end of a course by an approved instructor. Highly susceptible populations are persons who are more likely than other people in the general population to experience foodborne disease because they are immunocompromised, children pre-school through elementary school, and older adults. “Additional food safety training” doesn’t replace the required Washington State food safety training class or exam. Many Michigan food establishments must employ at least one certified food manager. Check with your local health department to see if you can get a 3 or 5-year card using the online program. The purpose of the certification program is to protect public health.
